Memorandum

Date:                                          February 25, 2025

To:                                          The Honorable Lake County Board of Supervisors

From:                                          Luke Bingham, Sheriff/Coroner

Subject:                     Approve and Accept Grant, 2024-3105 County of Lake-Sheriff’s Office-Search and Rescue from Direct Relief

Executive Summary:   RECOMMENDATION: Approve and accept a grant award 2024-3105 County of Lake-Sheriff’s Office-Search and Rescue from Direct Relief in the amount of $15,000; authorize the acceptance of funds via ACH; and authorize the Sheriff or his designee to sign the grant documents.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue (SAR) team provides critical services in locating and rescuing individuals in distress within the County's diverse terrain. The SAR Quad Team plays an essential role in these operations, utilizing quad vehicles to rapidly navigate challenging areas, significantly reducing response times and enhancing rescue capabilities.

In December, the Sheriff's SAR was invited, on short notice, to apply for a grant from Direct Relief. Subsequently, the Sheriff's SAR has been awarded a grant totaling $15,000 specifically designed to enhance capacity by purchasing (1) standard ATV/UTV with Basic Rescue Equipment and a set of protective clothing, equipment and gear.

Direct Relief is a nonprofit humanitarian organization whose mission is to improve the lives of people in poverty or emergency situations by providing the appropriate medical resources. The charity provides emergency medical assistance and disaster relief in the United States and internationally. Disaster response requires rapid mobilization, but the help must be of the right type. Direct Relief’s efforts are fast, yet always in direct response to specific requests from local partners and are coordinated with other organizations and public agencies to ensure the most efficient use of resources.

This grant is fully funded with no required matching funds from the County.

Thank you for your consideration.
