Memorandum
Date: March 5, 2024
To: The Honorable Lake County Board of Supervisors
From: Susan Parker, County Administrative Officer
Jenavive Herrington, Auditor-Controller/County Clerk
Subject: Approve travel to Phoenix, Arizona exceeding 1,500 miles for Deputy County Administrative Officer, Casey Moreno, and Emergency Event Fiscal Manager, Dakhota Hockett, to attend the Government Finance Officers Association Leadership Academy from March 24-29, 2024.
Executive Summary:
Staff is requesting the Board’s approval for Casey Moreno and Dakhota Hockett to travel in excess of 1,500 miles to the Government Finance Officers Association Leadership Academy at Arizona State University in Phoenix from March 24-29, 2024.
GFOA represents the entire United States and Canada. This Leadership Academy is held in a different location each session, and Phoenix Arizona is the nearest location available in 2024. Mrs. Moreno and Ms. Hockett applied for the Leadership Academy and were two of forty-five selected. Although there is some additional travel, the Leadership Academy is highly competitive, and the benefit of taking this opportunity far outweighs any additional cost due to the event location.
The Leadership Academy steps away from day-to-day technical areas in public finance and encourages participants to think about their individual development and the leadership role they play within their own departments or agencies as well as the broader organization. The academy focuses on work done in the classroom through various exercises, as well as through the networking time participants will have to interact with each other. The program’s overall goal is to present added information and ideas to participants to take back to their own organizations and to further develop their own leadership capabilities.
