From: Rob Howe, Sheriff/Coroner/Director of Emergency Services
Subject: (a) Approve Lake County Sheriff’s Office application for the Cal Fire Wildfire Prevention Grant (Education) in the amount of $100,000 for “Operation Lake Co Ready”, a joint partnership between Lake County Sheriff’s Department Office of Emergency Services and the Lake County Fire Chief’s Association to fund prevention and preparedness outreach materials and community education events at local fire districts. (b) Authorize County Administrative Officer Parker to sign forms: STD19, STD21 and STD204.
Executive Summary: The Lake County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services requests to submit a grant application to the Cal Fire Wildfire Prevention Grant program for wildfire prevention education. The project will develop a comprehensive community education and outreach program to enhance wildfire prevention and awareness for those residing in very high and high fire hazard severity zones with an emphasis on reaching those who are not internet or social media consumers. Through outreach material development in English and Spanish, the Lake County Sheriff’s Department Office of Emergency Services and the Fire Chief’s Association will provide information and resources at multiple annual community events; as well as education and training with tangible, take-home supplies for participants (including fire extinguishers and hand tools). This program is modeled after the demonstrably successful South Lake Fire District.
All requested funds will be used for supplies to complete the project. There is no match requirement. The Lake County Fire Chief’s Association submitted a letter of commitment to the project following a vote at its regular meeting with support from all fire districts. Letters of support have been received from the City of Lakeport and Lake County Health Services. The following provided verbal/e-mail support with the promise of a forthcoming letter of support: Kelseyville Presbyterian Church, Lucerne Area Revitalization Association, Habematolel Pomo of Upper Lake, Lake County Fire Safe Council, Tribal EcoRestoration Alliance (TERA) and Lake County Department of Social Services. The final application is due January 10, 2024.
