Subject: Consideration of Presentation of Community Development - Code Enforcement Illegal Dumping Abatement Grant Activities
Executive Summary: In July 2024, the Community Development Department received a grant award from CalRecycle for $250,000 to help clean up and combat the illegal dumping of trash and hazardous waste throughout Lake County. The Code Enforcement Division worked tirelessly to identify areas around the county prone to illegal dumping and identified 42 sites and the parties responsible for the properties. These properties have been designated through the grant for cleanup as well as to receive signage to discourage future dumping.
The County of Lake Code Enforcement Division is implementing its initiative to begin illegal dumping abatements in the beginning of the new year, focusing on removing waste and debris from public and private property. This effort aims to improve community health, safety, aesthetics, and the environment while discouraging future violations. The program includes site cleanups, community outreach, community targeted free dump days, and enforcement actions against offenders. Residents are encouraged to report illegal dumping and participate in cleanup events to help create a cleaner, more vibrant environment.
Targeted abatement locations include sites in Nice, Lucerne, Kelseyville, Clearlake Oaks, Lower Lake, Middletown, and North Lakeport. Code Enforcement will target one community at a time starting in January, to ensure complete cleanup leaving a pristine environment.
The grant will run through June of 2026 and help to develop a structure for ongoing activities to discourage illegal dumping into the future past the grant term.
