Subject:                     Presentation of Proclamation Designating the Month of April 2025 as Child Abuse Prevention Month

 

Executive Summary:

WHEREAS, approximately three million children are reported abused and neglected in the United States each year; and its estimated that over 1,990 children died from abuse and neglect in a single year. Five children die every day from child abuse. 66.1% percent of all child fatalities were younger than 3 years old. 81.8% of child fatalities involve at least one parent and of the children who died, 76.4% suffered child neglect and 42.1% suffered physical abuse either exclusively or in combination with another maltreatment type; and

WHEREAS, child abuse prevention is a community problem, and all citizens should become more aware of the effects of child abuse and its prevention, and finding solutions depends on the involvement of people throughout the community; and

WHEREAS, effective child abuse prevention programs succeed because of partnerships created among social service agencies, schools, religious and civic organizations, law enforcement agencies, and the business community to support parents in raising their children in safe and nurturing environments; and

WHEREAS, current local initiatives to prevent child abuse include: a countywide collaboration between Lake County Children’s Council and Building Resilient Lake County produced a Comprehensive Prevention Plan, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Overcomers education, the Nurturing Families Program, Abriendo Puertas, Positive Indian Parenting, Differential Response, Redwood Community Services and Lake County Office of Education Wrap Around Services, MotherWise, Lake County Tribal Health Home Visitation Program, County of Lake California Home Visiting Program, Lake Family Resource Center Family Empowerment, the Science of the Positive, and so many more; and

WHEREAS, events being held for the month of April this year are the Pinwheel Garden Challenge, Children’s Festival and Advocacy Walk, Children’s Memorial Flag, as well as child abuse information will be shared through different media for the month. Other events recognizing April as child abuse prevention will take place later throughout the year.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, the Lake County Board of Supervisors does hereby proclaim April 2025, as "Child Abuse Prevention Month" in Lake County and calls upon its citizens, community agencies, religious organizations, medical facilities, and businesses to increase their participation in our efforts to prevent child abuse, thereby strengthening the community in which we live.
