Subject: Adopt Proclamation Designating the Month of April 2023 as Alcohol Awareness Month in Lake County
Executive Summary:
WHEREAS, Excessive alcohol use and misuse impacts adults and youth of all racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, Cultural norms and social pressures have contributed to excessive alcohol use and misuse; and
WHEREAS, local Lake County law enforcement agencies including, the California Highway Patrol and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department report for the calendar year of 2022: 102 Public Intoxication arrests, 172 Driving Under the Influence violations, 21 Driving Under the Influence violations involving other drugs, and 97 DUI collisions, 12 of which resulted in fatalities; 3 fatalities were intoxicated pedestrians; and
WHEREAS, Lake County Behavioral Health Services provided DUI Program services to 382 participants in the calendar year 2022: and
WHEREAS, Lake County Behavioral Health Services has offered treatment services to 55 individuals with diagnosed Alcohol Use Disorders in the calendar year 2022; and
WHEREAS, in the State of California, from 2020-2021 an average of 19,335 annual deaths are attributable to excessive alcohol use, and 62.1% of those deaths are due to chronic causes, such as Alcohol Use Disorders: and
WHEREAS, through promotion of Alcohol Awareness Month, people from all walks of life are encouraged to become knowledgeable about what they can do to create a healthier tomorrow for themselves and others by helping to prevent these problems today.
WHEREAS, with commitment and support, excessive alcohol use and misuse can be prevented; however, success will not occur overnight; our patience and continued commitment to alcohol consumption education and prevention are imperative.
WHEREAS, The County of Lake Board of Supervisors and Lake County Behavioral Health’s Substance Use Disorder Services urges all citizens, families, governmental agencies, public and private institutions, businesses, healthcare, education systems in Lake County to support efforts that will increase community awareness, understanding and action to address excessive alcohol consumption and misuse in our community.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ____________, Board of Supervisor for the County of Lake, join with the Lake County Department of Behavioral Health Services, Substance Use Disorder Services do hereby proclaim that April 2023 is Alcohol Awareness Month in the County of Lake.
