From: Matthew Barnes, UCCE Area Director

Subject: 9:15 A.M. - Consideration of Presentation on the UC Cooperative Extension Forestry Program

Executive Summary:
The Forestry Program for Mendocino, Lake, and Sonoma Counties focuses on helping keep oak woodlands and coastal conifer forests healthy and resilient to disturbance. The program encourages good stewardship by providing information, resources, and technical advice through education and research. Extension efforts in Lake County have focused on helping landowners, managers, and stewards prepare and respond to disturbances (such as wildfire and drought) by providing information on vegetation management, helping the community build capacity to use fire as a stewardship tool, managing biomass and resprouting vegetation after fires, and hosting workshops on forest stewardship. Research projects in Lake County have focused on forest health issues, such as addressing tree mortality following drought, and understanding the ecology, biology, and management of the invasive Mediterranean oak borer. With all these efforts the Forestry Program works and collaborates closely with local partners such as NRCS, RCD, CAL FIRE, CLERC, Lake County Tribes, Lake County Government, Risk Reduction Authority, and many other groups.
