Subject: Adopt Proclamation Designating May 4-11, 2024, as National Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) Awareness Week in Lake County

Executive Summary: Adopt Proclamation Designating May 4-11, 2024, as National Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) Awareness Week in Lake County

WHEREAS, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a genetic bone disorder characterized by fragile bones that break easily. It is also known as "brittle bone disease." A person born with OI is affected throughout his or her lifetime; and
WHEREAS, there are many different types of OI with symptoms that range from mild to life-threatening, with variable clinical features such as fracture frequency, muscle strength or extra-skeletal problems affecting vision, hearing or other body organs and functions; and
WHEREAS, because there is no cure for OI, treatment focuses on minimizing fractures, the surgical correction of deformity, reducing bone fragility, maximizing mobility and independent function; and
WHEREAS, it is estimated that approximately 25,000 to 50,000 people in the United States have OI and with good medical treatment and supportive care, the majority of people will lead healthy, productive lives with an average lifespan; and
WHEREAS, increased funding is needed for education and research to help find more effective treatments; and
WHEREAS, the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation, a voluntary national health organization, strives to improve the quality of life for people with Osteogenesis Imperfecta by increasing awareness of this rare disease among the public, media, government, and medical communities.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, that the Lake County Board of Supervisors does hereby designate May 4-11, 2024, as National Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) Awareness Week in Lake County.
