SUBJECT: Consideration of Approval of New Extra Help Classification and Salary for Extra Help Clerical Support
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Staff submits for your Board's consideration and approval the creation of an Extra Help Clerical Support classification, tied to the California minimum wage. Currently California minimum wage is $10.50 per hour.
There are various departments within the County that use extra help staff to perform clerical, administrative and general support work. In many cases, departments want the option to hire and train individuals who do not have previous office/administrative work experience; however, under our current classification system all of our clerical/office support positions require at least one (1) year of previous experience. The creation of the Extra Help Clerical Support classification will give departments the option to hire individuals without previous experience (for example, high school students, recent graduates, individuals who are changing career fields, etc.) on an extra help basis.
Staff is requesting to tie the salary to the California minimum wage, rather than a specific grade or salary as the California minimum wage is scheduled to increase each year for the next several years (through January 2022). Tying the salary to minimum wage will allow departments to continue to use this classification on an on-going basis, without your Board needing to adjust the salary each year when the minimum wage changes.
