SUBJECT: Authorize Acceptance of a Donated X-Ray Machine for Use at Animal Care and Control from Pets Life Line, an Animal Rescue Organization in Sonoma, Ca.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Pets Life Line, an animal rescue organization in Sonoma, California, was donated a various assortment of animal medical equipment from a veterinary practice that went out of business. Nancy King, the Director of Pets Life Line, is familiar with Dr. Bachman (our staff veterinarian) and the work he does with various animal shelters. She offered him an x-ray machine at no cost, and he jumped on the opportunity on behalf of Lake County Animal Care & Control (LCACC would provide transportation cost at $4400).
The machine itself is a Universal X-Ray Machine manufactured in 1983. It was recently converted to digital and is valued in excess of $60,000. West Coast Imaging of Redding California has vetted the machine and assured us it is in excellent operating condition. Dale Stevenson MPH, a medical physicist, also evaluated the machine for proper shielding and determined that it is in compliance with State standards. He also provided direction regarding the personal shielding protection that is required during operation of the unit. Only Dr. Bachman or his assigned medical staff will be allowed to operate the machine.
Our local vets assist us with x-rays as needed, but still charge in excess of $140 each time we request them. As such, we only do so under extreme need. Having our own machine will not only allow us to better treat the injured animals we take in, but will give us and our associated rescue groups advanced knowledge of potential issues that can be dealt with immediately.
