MEMORANDUM

TO:                                          Board of Supervisors

FROM:                     Carol J. Huchingson, County Administrative Officer

DATE:                                          October 17, 2017

SUBJECT:  Consideration of Request for Board Approval of Recommended Changes to Paid County Emergency Leave Policy, including changing the title of said policy to “Paid Emergency Leave Policy”

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

With the assistance of the Human Resources Director, for your consideration, I am recommending changes to the County Policy on Paid Emergency Leave, which, as written, would provide support to County employees affected by the Sulphur Fire, and other future disasters declared in Lake County.

As your Board is well aware, the recent and ongoing firestorm in Northern California is comprised of fires devastating Lake County as well as contiguous counties, Mendocino, Napa and Sonoma.

It is not uncommon for Lake County employees to commute here for work from other counties and I am hearing of circumstances in which our own are impacted by wildfire disaster in the contiguous counties.  Since the intent of the original PEL policy is to provide support to affected employees, I recommend amending the policy to include disaster declared in a contiguous county in which a qualifying Lake County employee resides.
