SUBJECT: Approve the Sealed Bid Award for the Purchase of Forty Seven (47) Portable Radios to Motorola Solutions in the amount of $83,143

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The Lake County Sheriff's Department has chosen to upgrade the current portable radio used in the field by its patrol deputies and investigators to a more robust and dependable portable radio. After demonstrations of different types and styles of portable radios, the Sheriff's Department has chosen to purchase the Motorola APX 4000 portable radio. The quality, dependability and ability of these radios far exceeds the current portable radio and other radios of similar specifications. The Motorola APX 4000 is durable enough to withstand dust, heat, shock and water submersion. Its audio is high-quality and it has blue tooth connectivity, which will allow for adding extra features making the radio versatile to individual users. The upgraded portable radio will improve overall communications with personnel working in the field, thereby improving the overall officer safety which is foremost.

The Lake County Sheriff's Department is currently using a Kenwood NX-200 Analog/Digital portable radio as the Department was going to switch to digital use several years ago. Due to interoperability issues, the Sheriff's Department decided to upgrade its portable radio to a higher quality. Funds were secured through Homeland Security and a Request for Sealed Bid was issued on February 21, 2018. The bid was sent to six vendors, Fisher Wireless, Motorola Solutions, Advanced Communications/Precision Wireless, Delta Wireless, Apex Industry Services and Day Wireless Services and well as being advertised in the local paper and posted on both the County and Sheriff's Department websites.
