SUBJECT: Approve Letter of Support for Senate Bill (SB) 897, amendments to the Insurance Code relating to wildfire-related provisions of residential property insurance
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
As you may be aware, Senators McGuire and Dodd recently introduced SB 897, amendments to the Insurance Code relating to wildfire-related provisions of residential property insurance. I know we all appreciate the great lengths to which Senator McGuire, particularly, has gone to help Lake County residents recover from disaster. His work has been invaluable.
I recommend our Board support SB 897. As presently written, SB 897 would allow wildfire survivors to more quickly begin rebuilding their lives and homes, and bring much needed fairness and peace of mind to disaster survivors.
Given our unique perspective as a repeatedly disaster-impacted area, I recommend we also suggest that final language should prioritize balance in the insurance industry, to ensure local homeowners are not priced out of the market.
