MEMORANDUM
TO: Board of Supervisors
FROM: Jim Steele, District 3 Supervisor
DATE: May 8, 2018
SUBJECT: Approve Letter of Support for AB 2518, an act to add Article 10 (commencing with Section 4630) to Chapter 8 of Part 2 of Division 4 to the Public Resources Code, related to forestry and authorize the Chair to sign
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
This bill is important for the state and especially for Lake County in three ways:
1. The bill requires procurement of grid-balancing renewables: geothermal, biomass, and biogas. This helps to combat climate change and protect the environment.
2. This bill will preserve high-paying jobs and tax revenues from businesses such as the Geysers Geothermal Area, and this facility is crucial for the economic health of Lake County.
3. This bill will keep bioenergy facilities open to continue accepting wood waste that is thinned from forests and shrub lands to reduce wildfires. This type of fire mitigation is a critical concern for Lake County.
