FROM: Jan Coppinger, Special Districts Administrator
DATE: June 5, 2018
SUBJECT: Approve Long Distance Travel for Jan Coppinger to speak at the National Association of Clean Water Agencies 2018 Utility Leadership Conference in Boston, MA from July 23, 2018 through July 26, 2018

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Various agencies and entities assisted water systems in Lake County that were impacted by the Valley Fire. Special Districts has responded by reaching out and helping other agencies in surrounding counties that were affected by wildfire in subsequent years.

In the course of speaking at meetings of public water system managers, I have been asked to attend additional meetings to speak of the lessons learned in the Valley Fire and the need to recognize the value of assisting and encouraging consolidations to strengthen water infrastructure to expedite a community's ability to rebuild quickly after a devastating event.

After attending a National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) forum in Napa, CA last year, I was invited to speak at the NACWA 2018 Utility Leadership Conference in Boston, MA. The conference will be July 23 through July 26, 2018. I have been invited to be the featured speaker on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 before a roundtable discussion titled "Reflecting on the Future of US Water Sector".

Although the conference fees will be waived for speaking, travel costs would be paid by Special Districts. The round trip flight would be approximately $450.00, hotel would be approx. $300.00 and parking and other incidental costs would be approximately $200.00. The entire trip would cost approximately $1,000.00.

Special Districts does have this amount in the budget as we include various travel and training in our budget.
