MEMORANDUM

TO: BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
FROM: Shane French, Information Technology Director
DATE: June 26, 2018
SUBJECT: Approve Purchase of Vertiv Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) unit and accessories in the County Courthouse server room in the amount of $29,515.04; and authorize the IT Director to issue Purchase Order to CDW

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The Information Technology Department is requesting permission to purchase a replacement for the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) unit in the County Courthouse server room.

BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION:

The County of Lake maintains a variety of network and server infrastructure equipment in the Lake County Courthouse at 255 N. Forbes St., Lakeport. This equipment must be continuously protected from electrical power problems such as power surges, brown-outs, and under/over-voltage conditions. Additionally, battery backup is required to maintain operations during brief or extended power interruptions. The Information Technology Department currently utilizes a UPS that is approximately 13 years old. While this unit has served the department well, it has recently experienced issues that interrupted services throughout the county because the unit was unable to supply power to the equipment in the IT server room. This unit is no longer under warranty. Additionally, our department has learned that the unit is designed for single phase operation, whereas the server room electrical supply is three-phase. This is suboptimal and could lead to continued issues with the unit and the services it supports.

IT has received a quote for a new UPS unit that meets current needs while allowing for foreseeable future expansion. This unit is a three-phase unit, and will more efficiently utilize the power source available in the IT server room. Additionally, this unit will have a five year warranty. This purchase can be made utilizing National IPA contract.
