Subject:       Consideration of providing space in Historic Courthouse Museum Square to place a sculpture celebrating the culture and resilience of the Pomo people of Lake County

Date:                               July 10, 2018

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Museum staff in collaboration with the Lake Pomo Indian Tribal Advisory Committee have conceptually designed a sculpture of a Pomo Indian family to be commissioned and installed in front of the Historic Courthouse Museum in Lakeport. This sculpture of traditional dancers will engage the public in the appreciation of art, culture, and history and will serve as a tribute to past, present, and future generations of Pomo in celebration of the culture and resilience of the Pomo Indian people. Primary funding for the sculpture is anticipated to come from a National Endowment for the Arts grant and matching funds from local Tribal communities, private foundations and community donors; no County funding will be required for the sculpture. The life-sized sculpture will be on a polished concrete and obsidian base approximately eight feet long by three feet wide with subdued lighting.

RECOMMENDED ACTION: Staff recommends your Board’s support and motion for the approval to use space at the Historic Courthouse Museum Square for the memorial.
