MEMORANDUM

TO: Board of Supervisors
FROM: Crystal Markytan, Social Services Director
DATE: October 8, 2019
SUBJECT: Approve Request for Long Distance Travel to attend a training conference in Macungie, Pennsylvania from October 16th-18th, 2019 for Social Worker Angie Wynacht.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Child Welfare Services (CWS) is requesting approval for Angie Wynacht to attend a training conference in Macungie, Pennsylvania from October 16th-18th, 2019. This is the 10th annual "Right from the Start" conference on "Understanding, Investigating and Intervening in Violence Against Women and Children." This year's conference theme is, "How the system fails victims and how to fix it." Angie is a child abuse investigator in the Emergency Response Unit at CWS. The emergency response unit is responsible for investigating all the child abuse and neglect referrals received in Lake County within the Child Welfare System. Approximately, one third of all the referrals received in Lake County are related to violence within the home including domestic violence, physical abuse and sexual abuse. Angie is regularly assigned these types of referrals as she has passion to serve victims of sexual assault and violence and is the only certified forensic interviewer within the Department. This training conference is an excellent opportunity to learn from experts in the field about issues directly relevant to investigating and intervening in families experiencing violence within the home. Angie applied for the Teresa Scalzo Memorial Scholarship which is a $1,000 scholarship to cover the cost of this conference given to a public servant committed to changing the system to better the investigation and/or prosecution of crimes of interpersonal violence. Angie was chosen as the single recipient of this scholarship which will cover the majority of the cost including registration, transportation, lodging and meals.
