Subject: a) Approve Gun Violence Reduction Program (GVRP) Grant Award in the amount of $277,373; and (b) Authorize the Sheriff and Chairman to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the California Department of Justice

Executive Summary:

The Lake County Sheriff's Office has been awarded a California Department of Justice, Gun Violence Reduction Program grant, pending the acceptance by the Lake County Board of Supervisors.

The purpose of the Gun Violence Reduction Program grant, is to support local law enforcement agencies in conducting activities related to the seizure of weapons and ammunition from persons who are prohibited from possessing them, including efforts based upon entries in the California Department of Justice's Armed Prohibited Persons System (APPS).

The focus of the assigned deputy sheriff will be the enforcement of California firearms laws and the removal of firearms and ammunition from prohibited persons.

The awarded amount, $277,373, will fund 75% of the following costs; one deputy sheriff position, 75 hours overtime, equipment to include a laptop, mifi and cell phone monthly service, $900 mileage reimbursement per month and 5% administrative costs as outlined in the attached Lake County Sheriff[s Office_GVRP Budget-2021-22-1. The remaining 25% of costs will be paid through the Sheriff/Coroner budget 2201. $47,993 of this amount is being allocated during the mid-year budget update as well as the allocation of an additional deputy sheriff position. Since the entire amount of the funding has been received, the remaining amount will need to be carried over in the FY2022/23 and FY2023/24 budget cycles.
