Memorandum
Date: May 17, 2022
To: The Honorable Lake County Board of Supervisors
From: Jessica Pyska, District 5 Supervisor
Subject: Discussion and Consideration of Purchasing a Flag to be flown during Pride Month
Executive Summary:
Last year your Board adopted a Proclamation Designating the month of June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month to recognize the LGBTQ+ residents in Lake County. As stated in the Proclamation, California has been a leader in advancing the civil rights of its LGBTQ+ citizens and that all people deserve to be embraced and treated as equals.
May 17th is the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia and it is important to be aware that while progress has been made in the efforts of equity and inclusion for the LGBTQ+ community, there is still an overwhelming amount of discrimination this community faces. The LGBTQ+ residents within our community represent our families, our friends our neighbors, our teachers, our employees and our community leaders and we must stand with them. Flying the pride flag brings awareness not only to the progress we have made, but the progress we have yet to make.
This year, I would like your Board to consider the possibility of purchasing a pride flag and flying it at the Courthouse for the full month of June as many other jurisdictions have.
