Memorandum

Date:                                          February 14, 2023

To:                                          The Honorable Jessica Pyska, Chair, Lake County Board of Supervisors

From:                                          Susan Parker, County Administration Officer

Terre Logsdon, Chief Climate Resiliency Officer

Subject:                     Approve Letter of Support for Assembly Bill 297 - “Wildfires: Local Assistance Grant Program: Advance Payments,” and Authorize the Chair to Sign

Executive Summary:

Rural County Representatives of California (RCRC) recently announced their support for Assembly Bill 297.  As presently written, this proposed legislation would extend CAL FIRE’s ability to offer Advance Payments of up to 25% of the total grant award amount from its Wildfire Prevention Grants program through January 1, 2034.  CAL FIRE’s ability to advance funds (as opposed to issuing reimbursements 90 or more days later) helps relieve financial strain associated with larger and costlier mitigation projects.

Lake is one of 40 California Counties represented by RCRC, and supporting this Legislation, as currently written, is likewise consistent with your Board’s Vision 2028 Commitment to, “Develop and maintain a high standard of Disaster Prevention, Preparedness and Recovery.”

Staff recommends your Board approve this Letter of Support.
