Subject: Presentation of Proclamation Designating April 2024 as Poetry Month in Lake County

Executive Summary:

WHEREAS, National Poetry Month was launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996 to celebrate the integral role of poets in our culture and that poetry matters; and

WHEREAS, National Poetry Month has become the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K-12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, families, and-of course- poets, marking poetry's important place in our lives; and

WHEREAS, the County of Lake recognizes the contributions of poetry and literary arts for enriching the literary and cultural attributes of society; and

WHEREAS, the County of Lake acknowledges the relationship between poetry and political freedom in the exercise of free speech in forms recognizable by people all over the world; and

WHEREAS, the County of Lake recognizes that poetry represents one of the most enduring forms of expression, and contributes to the historical continuity of civilization.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT WHOLEHEARTEDLY PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Lake does hereby appoint April 2024 as Poetry Month for Lake County.
